چکیده

This communication presents some aspects of an on-going research on a class of indicators of scientific visibility. Relying on a new usage of classic citation distribution studies, the "activity index in citation classes" (AIC) describes the "relative citation profile" or distribution of actors' articles among quantile classes of citations defined by the world reference. AIC exists in multiple variants reproducing various types of fieldnormalization, as well as direct or cumulative (AICC) presentation. The profiles of AIC can be summarized by empirical indexes, or parameters of simple laws, which are good candidates for indicators of overall citation performance. As profile performance indicators derived from AICC and classical "relative impact" (RI) indicators basically reflect the same information, their comparison is appealing. Empirical profiles obtained for national or institutional actors also raise the question of homogeneity of scientific literature: the high tail (excellence) and especially the low tail of the profile can show large deviations to the medium range of profile reflecting the general performance.

Apriori vs . a posteriori normalisation of citation indicators

Two paradigmatic approaches to the normalisation of citation-impact measures are discussed. The results of the mathematical manipulation of standard indicators such as citation means, notably journal Impact Factors, (called aposteriori normalisation) are compared with citation measures obtained from fractional citation counting (called apriori normalisation). The distributions of two subfields ...

Background Use of bibliometric assessments of research quality isgrowing

Declaration of interest None. The aims of this paper are to discuss the measures used to evaluate the merits of psychiatric biomedical research, and to propose a new approach using a multidimensional selection of appropriate measures. Such measures can be used, for example, to inform decisions on the allocation of research funds (Lewison et al, 1998) within an institution or nationally, or on a...

Can networks of journal-journal citations be used as indicators of change in the social sciences?

Aggregated journal-journal citations for 1999 are compared with similar data in the Journal Citation Reports 1998 of the Social Science Citation Index. In addition to indicating local change, probabilistic entropy measures enable us to analyze changes in distributions at different levels of aggregation. The indicators are compared by elaborating the journal-journal mappings and in relation to s...
